Under-Sink Carbon vs Reverse Osmosis

Under-sink carbon systems make sense when the buyer wants better taste, lower lead/PFAS-related exposure for specific certified claims, and a normal faucet workflow. They usually do not reduce TDS, and that is not a defect unless TDS reduction is the goal.

Reverse osmosis is the more serious choice when broad reduction matters enough to accept a drain line, tank or powered tankless unit, prefilter schedule, membrane replacement, and wastewater. The strongest RO pages should cite NSF/ANSI 58 and still avoid saying RO makes unknown water safe.

Pitchers and tank RO systems can feel slow; faucet and under-sink carbon systems feel more immediate; tankless RO can improve flow but costs more and adds electronics. Filter Report scores this as an ownership factor, not a certification proof.

A lower TDS reading can confirm an RO or ion-exchange filter is doing something, but it does not prove that every health concern is gone. Some good carbon systems intentionally do not reduce TDS because they are aimed at specific chemicals, taste, odor, or lead claims.
